Do we all agree on a definition of feminism? A dance can take up feminism as its theme, but what does it mean for dance artists to play active, influential roles in the feminist cause? Can dancers bring useful ideas and strategies to feminist practice and struggle for justice? In turn, how have feminist ideas and strategies impacted the dance community?

Circling Back Guides: Maura Nguyen Donohue, Ana Rokafella Garcia

Part of Gibney’s Center Line series.

Also join us for Long Table: Women Move Forward: Dance in Feminism.

Curated and hosted by Senior Curatorial Director, Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Center Line is a series highlighting issues in the dance community through monthly conversations (Long Tables) and experiential gatherings (Circling Back).

Long Tables conversations adopt performance artist Lois Weaver’s non-hierarchical Long Table format, encouraging informal conversation around topics of concern to the community.

Circling Back events are experiential gatherings, guided by dance community elders, in which artists reflect on themes and ideas from the previous Long Table while sharing wisdom, core values, and ways of living that inform their creative movement practice. Each circle—unique in format and content—will establish respectful, generous and generative space held by the guides and all who attend.
