As in all of our nation’s systems and institutions, “whiteness” in the arts has been considered the default and, as such, rendered invisible. This evening’s Long Table invites white artists to unpack how this racial construct affects our arts landscape and how its impact can be dismantled. Co-presented with Dancing While Black, this Long Table was inspired by conversations about “white space” among the editorial team of the forthcoming Dancing While Black digital journal. While this is a space for white folks to unpack the detriments of white institutional culture, POC are welcomed and encouraged to join the conversation which hopes to enhance accountability within the artistic community.

Also join us for Long Table: White on White(ness) on White Box.
Curated and hosted by Senior Curatorial Director, Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Center Line is a series highlighting issues in the dance community through monthly conversations (Long Tables) and experiential gatherings (Circling Back).
Long Tables conversations adopt performance artist Lois Weaver’s non-hierarchical Long Table format, encouraging informal conversation around topics of concern to the community.
Circling Back events are experiential gatherings, guided by dance community elders, in which artists reflect on themes and ideas from the previous Long Table while sharing wisdom, core values, and ways of living that inform their creative movement practice. Each circle—unique in format and content—will establish respectful, generous and generative space held by the guides and all who attend.
