GIBNEY 280 BROADWAY
$15 – $20

DoublePlus embraces the artist-as-curator format to present three split-bill evenings featuring artists deserving of new or wider visibility, each curated by an established artist. The 2018 series is curated by Alice Sheppard, Kimberly Bartosik, and Kota Yamazaki.

Julian Barnett
2 Strings X
2 Strings X is a cacophony of vibration and memory. The performance attempts to calibrate and locate in a fluctuating field, exploring lineage, symbolism, and embodied artifacts. Sourcing from individual Japanese histories and building upon a multifaceted collaboration between Barnett and musician/performer, Kenta Nagai, a transgressive ceremony blurs lines between music and movement, musician and thespian, and opens planes of sensation for phenomenal bodies, fluid culture, and vulnerable structures.

Mina Nishimura
Sinking while Floating, Singing while Thinking
Sinking while Floating, Singing while Thinking is a study on fantastical bodies and also is an attempt of pinning down bodies that slip away from a present time, space and action. Re-evaluating vital correlations between “images” and “movements”, performers seek for alternative ways of being in a present moment and of connecting to each other.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Julian Barnett creates performances that examine the social-political possibilities for transformation and empathy, through the lenses of philosophy, musicology, science, and the supernatural. Born in Tokyo and raised in California, he works as a choreographer, performer, and arts advocate/educator. He has received commissions from Danspace Project (NY), Tangente (Montreal), Kampnagel (Hamburg), Dansehallerne (Copenhagen), Dansateliers (Rotterdam), i-Dance Festival (Hong Kong), and more. Julian was a danceWEB scholar at Impulstanz (Vienna) and a US/Japan Creative Artist Fellow, where he studied Butoh and began working with Kota Yamazaki. He has also performed with Jeanine Durning, Steve Paxton, Wally Cardona, Johannes Wieland and others.

Mina Nishimura, from Tokyo, was introduced to butoh and improvisational dance through Kota Yamazaki. She was the danceweb scholar at Impulse Tanz in 2009, and has been the Artist-in-Residence at Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Chez Bushwick, Movement Research, and Camargo Foundation (France) while teaching at Movement Research, Brooklyn Studio for Dance, Bennington College, UC Davis and Ferris University (Japan). Most recently, she has danced for John Jasperse, Rashaun Mitchell+Silas Riener, Kota Yamazaki, Dean Moss and Vicky Shick. Her latest evening-length work “Bladder Inn. (and X, Y, Z, W)” was premiered at Danspace Project in the past February.
