Beauty Happens

WORLD PREMIERE

Performances run June 8-10, 8:00 PM EDT

Beauty Happens explores intimacy, human resilience, adaptation, and physical empowerment. The work interrogates themes of instinct, chaos, control and the repercussions of touch. Influenced by the mating dances, flocking patterns, nesting, and homing mechanisms of birds, the work journeys through the construction and simultaneous unraveling of survival systems. The work centers femmeness and queerness and asks physical questions about both individual and group agency and autonomy in performance.

The work is performed by Shawn Brush, Marin Day, Lena Engelstein, Nik Owens, Javier Padilla, Kala Seidenberg, Rebecca Steinberg, and Carlo Antonio Villanueva. Beauty Happens is choreographed by the Falcon Dance collective with artistic and creative direction by Brit Falcon and sound composition, design, and recorded performance by Glen Fittin.

Gibney Presents is Gibney’s premier presentation series, offering a rich blend of dance and performance in fully-produced, evening-length commissions. This performance was curated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa as part of the Gibney Center 2022-2023 Season.

ABOUT FALCON DANCE

Falcon Dance is an interdisciplinary project-based creative team bridging science and art, in a practice which allows them to reimagine dance as healthcare. The work tethers between restoration and athleticism, care and rigor, while researching psycho-social vibrations through the moving, sounding, and drawing body. The process is highly collaborative and would simply not exist without the significant contributions in movement, ideas, and words from each artist. The company’s artistry grows wholeheartedly through the beautiful wisdom, friendship, and connection the entire company gains through the collaborative process.
