CURATED BY TEI BLOW

DoublePlus embraces the artist-as-curator format to present split-bill evenings featuring artists deserving of new or wider visibility, each curated by an established artist.

Laurel Atwell
We Wield
We Wield is a trio of women gathering to elevate the self, the group, and the surroundings. Together they pursue altered states via altered understandings of time, space, and rules of engagement in order to begin a expansion beyond the accepted limitations of the body-mind continuum. We Wield is an attempt to build ways of being for a time where reality is fantasy.

Hyung Seok Jeon
Deep Out Agents
Deep Out Agents is a multimedia portrayal and analysis of the human tendency to fight against conformity. Jeon deconstructs two videos recorded over a period of four years of anonymous middle-aged Asian men exercising vigorously. He shares footage in conjunction with his moving body to objectify physicality and explore compliance.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Laurel Atwell has been performing and making work since moving to Brooklyn, NY in 2008. Most recently Laurel has presented work with Jessica Cook while in residence in MoMA PS1’s VW Dome and with Tei Blow at Baryshnikov Arts Center. She has performed in the work of Milka Djordjevich (for which she was nominated for a Bessie Award for Outstanding Performer, 2018), Mariangela Lopez, Phoebe Berglund, Kim Brandt, Melanie Maar, Kathy Westwater, Tess Dworman, Ursula Eagly, and Nikima Jagudajev. Her own work has been presented at Abrons Arts Center, Gibney Dance, Center for Performance Research, Movement Research at Judson Church, Pieter Performance Space in Los Angeles, CA, and Links Hall in Chicago, IL. Laurel teaches qi gong as well as a collaborative teaching practice with Tess Dworman–under the moniker WellMan–that shares their qi gong and meditation practices.

Hyung Seok Jeon is a South Korean multi-disciplinary theatre artist who directs, performs and designs videos for stage. In January 2018, produced by Underwater New York, he created and performed an hour-long solo piece ‘A Held Posture’, a meditation on generational loss in relation to a sensation of sinking into deep water. In March 2019, he performed in a devised theatre project ‘Mythology Upon the Table’ which was produced by Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group for 2019 Taiwan International Festival of Arts. The production was nominated for the Taishin Award. Also, he worked as a member of the design team for Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble’s The Art of Luv (Part 6): Awesome Grotto! which was nominated for 2019 Bessie Award for Outstanding Visual Design. He is working as a video designer/performer on David Neumann and Marcella Murray’s upcoming project ‘Distances Smaller Than This Are Not Confirmed’, which will premiere on January 2020 at Abrons Arts Center. He is a recipient of 2015 Fulbright graduate study award.
