Making Dance: Gwen Welliver

making dance: a monthly cohort
gwen welliver

march 17 from 12:00 – 6:00 pm
March 18 from 12:00 – 5:00 pm
Fee: $100
participants must attend both sessions

You set out to do one thing and you end up doing another thing. In this workshop we are going to focus on that other thing. Locating and making use of these moments of veering off are fundamental to making your best work: observations and discussions about the myriad ways of working and structuring work will unfold. The movement material this practice generates will not be seen and edited purely for its appearance —instead, its rigor of attention to do the complex operations at play are prioritized. Workshop participants are free to focus on either movement development or choreographic process.

Gwen Welliver is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She performed with Doug Varone and Dancers (1990-00), was awarded a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” for Sustained Achievement (2000), and served as Rehearsal Director for the Trisha Brown Dance Company (2000-07). Welliver’s work has been presented on the stage and in gallery settings. Recent support for her process has come from Movement Research, La MaMa, FCA Emergency Grant, NYFA Artist’s Fellowships, NYLA, LMCC, New Music USA, and CPR. Teaching has been central to Welliver’s practice as a performer and creator. She taught extensively in academic, cultural, and conservatory settings around the world — at venues as varied as the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios – P.A.R.T.S. (Brussels), Movement Research (NYC), the American Dance Festival, and Tisch School of the Arts. Welliver is now on faculty at Florida State University.
