g1(host): lostatsea grapples with what it means to live within conditions shaped by the “afterlife” of slavery. As a serial, multi-media performance and mobile site of study, I pursue questions regarding my body’s status as it pivots on this fundamental query: what remains of the Middle Passage as force, gesture, and affect? Exploring themes of loss, alchemy, geological debris, and generational accretions, I trace a dense, energetic nothingness. Here, “wake work,” as scholar Christina Sharpe asserts, operates as a mode of suspension, a sensory field of historical being, an oceanic black thing that we’re all drenched by and in.

ABOUT nia love
nia love is a 2017 Bessie Award recipient for Outstanding Performer as part of the Skeleton Architecture ensemble,
convened by Eva Yaa Asantewaa. She is a mother, grandmother, activist, choreographer, and educator. She is a two-time Fulbright Fellow, a two-time recipient of the Brooklyn Arts Exchange/BAX Artist-in-Residence program, and two-time recipient of New York Live Arts’ Suitcase Fund Award. Her work has been presented at NYU Skirball, Danspace Project, Harlem Stage, Judson Church, Kennedy Center, New York Live Arts, NOLA Cultural Arts Center, MOCADA, Montpelier Arts Center, PS122, Snug Harbor, and the Nafasi Art Space-Tanzania, among others. Presently, she works at BAX as both the Artist Advisor to the Artist-In-Residence program and the Racial Equity Advisor. Love also serves as Assistant Professor at Queens College, Bard College, and The New School. Love was recently a Visiting Professor at UCLA and the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
