NEITHER STARVED NOR COLD

Neither Starved Nor Cold is a movement piece about identity and self-acceptance as it follows Canadian amputee dancer Lawrence Shapiro’s journey through dance. The performance is conceptualized and choreographed by Heidi Latsky.

With two non-disabled performers of Heidi Latsky Dance, Carmen Schoenster and Judith Garfinkel, as his “Greek chorus”, Lawrence boldly exposes both his vulnerability and fierceness in this work. The piece challenges preconceptions of the non-normative body and creates a rich dynamic of integrated performance art.

Neither Starved Nor Cold includes an opportunity to converse with the artists in a post-performance discussion.

ABOUT LAWRENCE SHAPIRO

Lawrence Shapiro is a validated Deaf and Disability Artist with the Canada Council for the Arts and a leading amputee dancer in his native Canada. Career highlights include Hammersmith & Fulham Arts Festival London (2018), the Vienna International Dance Festival (2015) and Discovering (2016) which was the first integrated dance piece in Canada to feature an above knee amputee in a leading role. He has given his presentation on the role of the amputee in integrated dance to dance conferences in Canada and the UK. The presentation’s American debut took place this year at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Centre as part of the Dance Studies Association Conference. Lawrence is proud to make his New York City debut under the direction of Heidi Latsky for this performance of Neither Starved Nor Cold.

ABOUT HEIDI LATSKY

Heidi Latsky’s 38-year dance career began in Montreal, Canada, continued with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, and evolved further in 2001 when she founded her company, Heidi Latsky Dance (HLD). Regarded by the New York Times as “a choreographer and dancer of uncommon intelligence and fluidity”, Latsky’s work has been featured at both theatrical and site-specific venues. Latsky continues to explore and expand the very rich field of integrated dance.

All attendees will be required to adhere to Gibney’s COVID-19 safety policies. Audience members will be required to provide proof of full vaccination and to wear masks/face coverings at all times. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted at this time.

ABOUT POP: PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY PROJECT

POP provides the dance community with increased support for showings and performances.

POP enables dance artists to self-produce performances and showings at Gibney through a curated rental process. Artists can participate in POP through Performances, Showings, or Open Rehearsals. POP Performances offer a three-night run in The Theater (Studio H) at 280 Broadway. POP Showings & Open Rehearsals are more informal showings in our studios.
