Celebrating its 20th anniversary, GroundWorks presents a world premiere by Cleveland native and internationally renowned choreographer Dianne McIntyre. Regarded as an artistic pioneer, with an impressive career spanning four decades with choreography for dance, theatre, television and film, Ms. McIntyre brings her individualistic style to GroundWorks in a dramatic new work. Also on the program is James Gregg’s éveillé (Awake) inspired by Italian poet Giambattista Basile’s version of the Sleeping Beauty story. Creating this work in 2017 for GroundWorks, Gregg combines his unique “fixed point” style of movement while re-imagining a timeless story about tenderness, love, dark beauty and tragedy. Rounding out the program is LUNA by GroundWorks Artistic Director David Shimotakahara. LUNA explores the nature of desire and its deeply held and often opposing motivations. “These polarities developed into a series of physical relationships that reveal many facets in a cycle of experience,” Shimotakahara says of LUNA. “That cycle is like the moon, as primal and unknowable as it is familiar.”

Now celebrating its 20th season, GroundWorks DanceTheater is dedicated to the development and presentation of new choreography and collaborations based in Northeast Ohio. The five-member company performs new works by artistic director David Shimotakahara, as well as commissioned work by nationally and internationally acclaimed choreographers including Robert Moses, Ronen Koresh, Dianne McIntyre, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Jill Sigman, Kate Weare, David Parker and many others. GroundWorks is committed to presenting unique opportunities for engaging the community through activities such as open rehearsals, work-in-progress showings, master classes, and educational outreach to under served public school children, college students and seniors.

POP: PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY PROJECT

POP provides the dance community with increased support for showings and performances.

POP enables dance artists to self-produce performances and showings at Gibney through a curated rental process. Artists can participate in POP through Performances, Showings, or Open Rehearsals. POP Performances offer a three-night run in The Theater (Studio H) at 280 Broadway. POP Showings & Open Rehearsals are more informal showings in our studios.
