HOME

HOME is an international cross-collaborative dance project with choreographers from six countries: Maria Naidu (Sweden), Ashley Lobo (India), Souleymane Badolo (Burkina Faso), Sandra Paola López Ramírez (Colombia), Bassam Abou Diab (Lebanon), and Dance Entropy’s Artistic Director Valerie Green (US). These esteemed choreographers were commissioned by Green to create a work for her company examining the meaning of home from their unique perspectives, drawing upon the significance of this concept in their home countries. Directed by Green, the dynamic full-evening work, which weaves together the different dances, explores identity, culture, environment, ritual, history, and community.

Green met the choreographers while performing and teaching abroad and knew she wanted to collaborate with them on HOME. As part of the project, she invited each choreographer to work with Dance Entropy in two-week residencies in New York City. This ambitious project was initiated in 2019 and has been shown in various phases throughout its development; VD/DE is pleased to premiere the work at Gibney.  In these divided times, connection and understanding across diverse cultures is more important and needed than ever.

ABOUT DANCE ENTROPY

Founded in 1998, Valerie Green/Dance Entropy (VG/DE) believes in humanizing movement, both in Green’s critically acclaimed choreographic work and the company’s mission to plant creative seeds in communities across the world. Intersecting the mortal and transcendent, sensual and sophisticated, visceral and self-aware, VG/DE invites the artist, the audience—the human—into a compelling physical experience. Based out of its home studio, Green Space in Queens, NY, VG/DE combines performance and specialized outreach programs to inspire communities in cultural institutions throughout the world.

POP: PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY PROJECT

POP provides the dance community with increased support for showings and performances.

POP enables dance artists to self-produce performances and showings at Gibney through a curated rental process. Artists can participate in POP through Performances, Showings, or Open Rehearsals. POP Performances offer a three-night run in The Theater (Studio H) at 280 Broadway. POP Showings & Open Rehearsals are more informal showings in our studios.

All events take place at our 280 Broadway location, across from City Hall. The main entrance for this location is at 53A Chambers Street. Gibney 280 Broadway is an accessible venue. This event will take place on the 2nd floor of Gibney in The Theater, which is accessible via elevator from the main entrance at 53A Chambers Street.
