NYC Winter Study
NYC WINTER STUDY PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH AN IMMERSIVE AND SUPPORTED INTRODUCTION TO THE NYC DANCE COMMUNITY OVER TWO WEEKS.

The program is designed to build a supportive network and community, expose students to new and challenging ideas and movement styles, and share tools for building a sustainable career in the performing arts.
NYC Winter Study participants create a personalized schedule comprised of Gibney’s professional classes; attend performances as a group at a variety of NYC venues; and engage with working artists in the city through seminars, panels, and discussions.
The program includes:
- Self-Customized Schedule of 15 Weekly Classes
- Artist Discussions
- Professional Development Workshops
- Dance Injury Prevention Workshop with the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
- Curated Performance Visits across New York City
NYC Winter Study is closed to a maximum of 15 participants so that each can receive individual support and guidance throughout the program.
Participants who complete the program receive a Certificate of Completion.

CURRICULUM
The Winter Study curriculum is designed to serve professional or aspiring professional dancers. By employing a wide range of esteemed faculty representing diverse styles, participants are able to enjoy creative and movement potential daily. Winter Study is intended to be welcoming, supportive, and provide a safe environment for adult students of all abilities to take risks and grow. Participants will join a diverse community of artists pursuing their passion in one of the greatest cities in the world.
Program participants will take 30 classes over the course of two weeks, chosen from Gibney’s open class offerings in a range of dance styles. In addition to dance classes, Winter Study students attend artist discussions with artists active in the field, attend professional development workshops, and experience an Injury Prevention Workshop with the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.
Provided COVID-19 cases are trending low in New York City during the program, NYC Winter Study will include performance visits at venues across the city. New York City is home to countless dance companies and performance venues. Seeing dance works is an important activity for any dancer and is a highlight of training in NYC.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Weekly Classes
Winter Study participants choose 30 classes from Gibney’s Drop-In Class Schedule over the course of two weeks.
Gibney holds over 60 Drop-In Classes weekly in a wide range of techniques and levels including Contemporary,Floorwork, Gaga, Countertechnique, Ballet, Street/Club Styles, Somatic practices, and more. We encourage program participants to try all class offerings at Gibney. This is an opportunity for program participants to take class alongside NYC professionals, explore classes in new styles, and delve into their own personal interests.
Artist Discussions
With consideration for a multiplicity of career expressions and entry points, these conversations with artists and dance-workers of diverse backgrounds will aim to expand our understanding of what a career in dance can be. Participants will connect with esteemed artists who are critical thinkers, community builders, artist-entrepreneurs, and who have built their own sustainable careers in the dance field.
Professional Development Workshops
Gain tools to build and sustain your own thoughtful and unique career in dance. Workshops will cover an array of foundational skills for independent artists including writing artist statements and resumes, financial literacy, entrepreneurship in the arts, and more. These workshops support dance professionals of all backgrounds building a unique and sustainable career through accessible learning, expanding skills, and fostering a diverse and inclusive community.

Injury Prevention Workshop with the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
Performance Visits
Gibney Winter Study Staff will curate a schedule of performance visits highlighting multiple performance venues and a range of contemporary styles. Tickets for group performance visits are included in tuition and will be purchased by Gibney. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from venues.
Please note that masks and vaccination are required at many performances, and many indoor venues require proof of vaccine boosters. In the case of rising COVID-19 cases in New York City or widespread performance cancelations, this component may be removed in 2023, resulting in a tuition adjustment.

Scholarships:
Limited partial need-based scholarships are available for NYC Winter Study 2023!
Scholarship applications will be reviewed separately from program applications and will have no impact on acceptance into the program. We cannot guarantee any scholarship amount requested but will work with participants to meet their needs as much as possible.
To apply for a scholarship, complete your Winter Study Application and complete the Scholarship Application by the December 4th deadline.
PAYMENT METHODS
Acceptable methods of payment for tuition include credit/debit card, check, wire transfer, TransferWise, or cash. All payments must be in US Dollars. Checks must be drawn on a US bank in US Dollars and can be made out to Gina Gibney Dance, Inc. Cash payments are accepted in person only (please do not mail cash!) at a scheduled time.
REFUND POLICY
Tuition deposit payments are non-refundable.
No refunds are given once the program has started, regardless of program completion or withdrawal. Dismissal from the program will not constitute a reason for any refund.
ELIGIBILTY
All applicants must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the program.

Participants are expected to attend all sessions to the best of their ability.
This program is closed to a limited number of participants in order to provide individualized support.
NYC Winter Study is geared toward dancers preparing to begin, or recently beginning, their professional career in dance. Applicants should have some prior dance experience as they will be dancing alongside professionals. As students may build their own class schedule from Gibney’s diverse offerings, all dancers will find a challenging and fulfilling schedule.
English Proficiency is not required, though an understanding of English is strongly encouraged to take full advantage of all curriculum.
International dancers are welcome to join. Due to the short time frame, visa sponsorship is not available for NYC Winter Study. If you are interested in studying at Gibney with a student visa, please learn more about our Visa & Professional Training Program.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
Students who successfully complete NYC Winter Study will receive a Certificate of Completion.
