This class is designed to access multiple threads at once such as: greater range of motion and articulation, coordination, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, sense of scale, rhythm, alignment, injury prevention, ascent and descent, musicality and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis while traversing through space and shifting off center in a mode that reflects a play between athleticism, performance, and a particular disposition.
Jon Kinzel is a choreographer, dancer, and visual artist. He has created more than 30 pieces, including numerous commissions and solo shows, which have been presented in a variety of national and international venues since 1988. Recently he presented, Someone Once Called Me A Sound Man (2013) at The Chocolate Factory; hurry (2013) co-created with Jean Butler at Danspace Project, The Joyce, and the Dublin Dance Festival; The Generalist (2013) at Axis Ballymun; Unheard of Annual Giving (2013) with Othershore Dance Company at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and La MaMa Moves! Festival; harmony hard a pulsing vein (2013) with Enrico Wey at Danspace Project; Available Light (2011) with Tillett Lighting Design and OHNY; Music Lightweight (2011) at The NOT Festival in Brooklyn; and, Responsible Ballet and What We Need Is a Bench to Put Books On (2010) at The Kitchen. He has received support from the Harkness, Puffin, and Mertz Gilmore foundations, been a Martha Duffy Memorial Fellow at the Baryshnikov Arts Center (2009-10), and an artist in residence at the Gibney Dance Center (2013-2014), New York Live Arts (2013-2014), The Yard (2012, 2013), and Movement Research (1998-1999 and 2009-2010). He received The 2012 Artist Award from the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and, his flat art/works on paper have been exhibited in New York City and Boston and featured in publications such as the Movement Research Performance Journal and SCHIZM Magazine. He has worked with Matthew Barney in the film series The Cremaster Cycle which was featured in an exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, John Kelly in Moondrunk presented by Lincoln Center, Rachid Ouramdane as a guest soloist at the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Paris, as well as Jodi Melnick, Vicky Shick, Philip Connaughton, Susan Rethorst, Jeremy Nelson, Creach/Koester, John Jasperse, Seline Baumgartner, Vivian Stoll, Jonathan Bepler, Lance Gries, KJ Holmes, Bob Ajar, Susan Braham, Jennifer Monson, Michael Whaites, Susan Sgorbati, Keith Thompson, Jim Dawson, Nina Katan, Cydney Wilkes, Jeanine Durning, Yoshiko Chuma, Sally Silvers, Mike Taylor, and Patricia Hoffbauer, among others. Currently he is on the faculty of Movement Research and a Teaching Artist with Lincoln Center Education, and, he has been an Adjunct Professor and Guest Artist at Barnard College, New York University, Yale University, George Washington University, Amherst College, Vassar College, Dance House in Dublin, TsEKh International Summer School in Moscow, and the Merce Cunningham Trust at City Center.
