Workshop with nia love

This workshop opens a space to study submersion as a resistance practice and attend to the blackness that we are all drenched in. Through objects, images, and telling our “water stories,” we will move, reflect, play, write, draw, discourse, rest, and soak our feet. Gathering up small scores of bodily gestures, we draw upon the sediments that accumulate inside and beyond our memories. Our aim is to create malleable networks that aid us in remembering, imagining, and working towards our collective fugivity.

Open to all ages (children welcomed!) and experiences (no dance training required). Please bring a personal heirloom to share with the group.

nia love is a 2017 Bessie Award recipient for Outstanding Performer as part of the Skeleton Architecture ensemble, convened by Eva Yaa Asantewaa. She is a mother, grandmother, activist, choreographer, and educator. She is a two-time Fulbright Fellow, a two-time recipient of the Brooklyn Arts Exchange/BAX Artist-in-Residence program, and two-time recipient of New York Live Arts’ Suitcase Fund Award. Her work has been presented at NYU Skirball, Danspace Project, Harlem Stage, Judson Church, Kennedy Center, New York Live Arts, NOLA Cultural Arts Center, MOCADA, Montpelier Arts Center, PS122, Snug Harbor, and the Nafasi Art Space-Tanzania, among others. Presently, she works at BAX as both the Artist Advisor to the Artist-In-Residence program and the Racial Equity Advisor. Love also serves as Assistant Professor at Queens College, Bard College, and The New School. Love was recently a Visiting Professor at UCLA and the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
