The meaning of the word “home” is deeply personal. Its definition varies based on one’s relationship to it. For some, home is the place we can always return to, while for others it’s something we are looking to find. It can stir up feelings of security and safety, or trigger memories of trauma and pain. However we each choose to define it, the concept of “home” has a profound impact on each of our lives.
Gibney Dance Company’s HOME program features two world premieres that explore the many nuanced layers of this universal theme through the unique lenses and experiences of GDC Guest Choreographers Adam Barruch and Shamel Pitts, both native New Yorkers.
Menagerie has received generous support from The Artis Grant Program.
Shamel Pitts is a 2018 Princess Grace Choreography Fellowship Award winner for the creation of Menagerie.

EMERGE is an innovative platform for emerging artists to create new work on world-class dancers and present their work in one of the most exciting venues in New York City. The 2018 EMERGE program features New York City-based choreographers Chanel DaSilva and Bobbi Jene Smith alongside the inaugural GDC/Springboard EMERGE Choreographic Award Winner, Los Angeles-based Micaela Taylor.
Each artist will teach classes, offer creative process sessions and dialogues about the future of the dance field, and create a new work on GDC to premiere on a shared evening. EMERGE highlights the continual expansion of GDC’s mission: from its beginning 27 years ago as a vehicle for the choreographic vision of its Founder Gina Gibney, to then welcoming re-stagings and new commissions from a wide range of guest choreographers, and now providing visibility, resources, and space to the next generation of creators in the contemporary dance community.
