Words from Eva Yaa Asantewaa
Senior Director of Curation and Editorial Director:
“I was delighted to catch a few moments with Canadian-born tap dance artist Lisa La Touche, curated for Gibney’s new Connections series by her colleague, master tap dancer Kazunori Kumagai. Connections celebrates how rising artists have been supported and influenced by other artists they respect–past or present teachers, mentors, or exemplars of the best in their field. It’s about the human connections that drive the creative spirit.
Our Gibney team is excited to host Lisa’s virtual premiere of her new solo, TRAX, as well as the US premiere of her ensemble piece, Fool’s Gold.
TRAX represents an unusual approach to tap in its setting (outdoors in the Canadian Rocky Mountains) and its exploration and storytelling sourced in Black Canadian history. I asked La Touche to share how she arrived at the idea of honoring this particular treasure trove of Black, Canadian, and tap history.”
