Johnny Mathews III is a freelance dance artist and arts administrator living in Brooklyn. He graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with a BFA in dance and a minor in Performing Arts Management & Entrepreneurship. He has performed internationally in works by Maxine Doyle, Johannes Wieland, and Ohad Naharin, among other prestigious choreographers. Mathews has trained at Springboard Danse Montreal, B12 Dance Festival, Gaga Intensives in Tel Aviv, Sidra Bell’s Summer & Winter Module, and Urban Bush Women’s Summer Leadership Institute. As a choreographer, he has presented works at The Craft NY in Brooklyn, the Mendelssohn Theatre, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. In March 2021, Mathews was an artist-in-residence at The Residency Project @880 in Pasadena, CA. Mathews draws from pop culture, magical realist and surrealist literature, queer theory, visual art, and Tanztheater traditions to create work that encourages expansive thought and radical imagination.
