Knot In My Name is a multimedia performance work that explores the intersections of Segev’s personal and sociopolitical contexts as an anti-Zionist Israeli trans woman immigrating to the U.S. Weaving together text, movement, elaborate sound and video design, biting humor, many characters and even more costume changes, this piece is an invitation to experience the necessary heartbreak that comes from confronting the huge gaps between the reality and narratives we are taught about the body and place we are born into. By letting go of what never really belonged to us, we might create the space for reclaiming what does.
 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ita Segev makes performance, writes, performs, acts and does advocacy & community building work, mainly around the intersection of her personal and sociopolitical contexts as an anti-Zionist Israeli trans woman.

Ita is a 2019 Gibney presents Artist in Residence where she is premiering her show ‘Knot In My Name’ which was developed through a 2018-2019 Brooklyn Arts Exchange Artist in Residence program, a 2018 New York Theater workshop summer residency, a Fall 2017 BAX space grant as well as grants from Women & Performance: a journal of feminist theory and the Mertz Gilmore Foundation.

Ita recently collaborated in different capacities with Tristan Powell, 600 HIGHWAYMEN, Shakina Nayfack, Lillieth Glimcher & RAD Pereira (You Are Here) and Juliana May. She’s performed in institutions such as as The Public Theater, La MaMa, Abrons Art Center, Danspace Project, Williamstown Theater Festival, MaSS MoCA, PACE Gallery, NYLA and Woolly Mammoth and spoke in universities such as NYU and Columbia University.

Ita is the founder of ‘T4Palestine’ (in collaboration with Daryn Copland) – an open online recourse for trans folks in the US looking to take hormones that are not produced by the state of Israel and ‘(Space) For the Girls’ – a residency and curatorial program at Brooklyn Art Exchange for trans women and femmes making live performance.

Tristan Powell is a director working across time based arts, primarily focusing on transfeminine representation. She was a 2018 Half Initiative Ryan Murphy Directing Fellowship Mentee on the FX network show Pose. Other work includes: GRL BRAIN (creator/performer, Danspace Project); WENDY, PETER.
