Work Up 5.2: Aye Eckerson, Emily Winkler-Morey, Javier Padilla

Work Up 5.2

Work Up is an annual residency, professional development, and performance program that supports early career artists. Don’t miss post performance discussions with the artists each Friday and post performance receptions each Saturday.

FIELDS (intro) is a solo performance that comes from a place of creating for lost things. It is created out of a desire (need) to name/create/imagine a history where one is not available. This work uses fiction, dreamscapes, theory, and personal historical documents in an attempt to come to terms with and heal ancestral wounds.

SomeBody Stories is a dance and spoken word performance in three parts. The poems and movement in SomeBody Stories have been following Winkler-Morey for the past nine years, gathering urgency over time. It is the autobiographical work that they must create before they can make art ‘about’ anything else.

paraíso is a reunion. A love letter to times that were and places that truly exist. paraíso is our monologue sung into our hairbrush as the booming of reggaeton plays in the background. It’s the phone call you missed from your mom; the second the city chews you up and spits you back out. paraíso is a nostalgic romp about love and the duality of engaging in two cultures, two languages, and two places to call home.
