Renter Spotlight: Chrystie Street Ballet Academy

On a normal day, Gibney’s 23 studios are a bustling artistic nexus. We love walking down the hallway and seeing different artists, different projects, and different communities making each space their own. We are missing that feeling, and want to find a way to share it with you.

We’ve asked a group of renters whose rehearsals, showings, workshops, and events have been postponed or suspended to give us a glimpse of what they’re working on, share the ways we can support them right now, and tell us what the first thing they’ll do is once they’re back in the studio.

The first thing we’ll do? Close our eyes, feel the floor supporting us, and take a deep breath of gratitude.

Who are you?
Chrystie Street Ballet Academy (CSBA) originally opened its doors in 2006 at our original location on Chrystie Street in Lower Manhattan.  Our dedicated teaching staff offers a professional yet nurturing ballet program for young dancers ages 3 – 18 years. CSBA currently has approximately 85 students in its roster and holds 15 classes a week, Pre-Ballet through Ballet 5, at the Gibney Studios (Downtown.)  Our classes have served students from all five NYC boroughs as well as New Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island.

What is your favorite memory of working in Gibney’s studios?
Watching our beautiful dancers dance across the floor, using the space to its fullest!

What are you most looking forward to about being back in the studio?
We dearly miss the space, the room to move, and our community. We can’t wait to be back in the studio, to greet one another in person, and to feel the joyful expansiveness of our bodies moving through space.

What is the first thing you will do when you are back in the studio?
Hopefully—hug my students, and then get right back to work!
