Renter Spotlight: Service Learning Project (SLP)

On a normal day, Gibney’s 23 studios are a bustling artistic nexus. We love walking down the hallway and seeing different artists, different projects, and different communities making each space their own. We are missing that feeling, and want to find a way to share it with you.

We’ve asked a group of renters whose rehearsals, showings, workshops, and events have been postponed or suspended to give us a glimpse of what they’re working on, share the ways we can support them right now, and tell us what the first thing they’ll do is once they’re back in the studio.

The first thing we’ll do? Close our eyes, feel the floor supporting us, and take a deep breath of gratitude.

“We look forward to a time when we can gather together at Gibney and celebrate our amazing young advocates.”

Who are you?
We are the Service Learning Project (SLP), a civic engagement program for youth in grades K-12.  Every SLP project is youth-driven and every solution has a real impact on a pressing social issue. Our students have tackled issues like bullying, climate change, homelessness, and gun violence. Their solutions are varied and include direct action, changes to school policies, awareness-raising campaigns, fundraising, and petitioning local and national legislators.

How can we support you right now?
We were so excited to hold our fourth annual spring benefit, on the evening of April 30th, in Gibney’s gorgeous Studio U.  The spring benefit is our most important fundraising event of the year—all proceeds are used to cover the expense of SLP programs at public schools in historically under-served neighborhoods.

If you’d like to support our work, here are a few ways you can do that:

  • Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook
  • Follow us AND and share our #SLPService Challenges (created in response to the pandemic) with all the young people in your life
  • Share our website with a school that you think might be interested in partnering with SLP
  • If you can, purchase a ticket to our spring fundraiser—postponed for now—but always a lovely evening out
  • If you can, make a donation to support our work—no amount is too small!

What are you most looking forward to about being back in the studio?
We look forward to a time when we can gather together at Gibney and celebrate our amazing young advocates.
