Venue Details

Gibney: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center is accessible via elevator from the main entrance at 53A Chambers Street. There are automated, double doors at this entrance. Please utilize the square actuator to the side of the entrances to mobilize the doors. Upon entrance, there will be a wide hallway and a guard stationed at a desk near the bottom of the stairwell. You will be asked to sign in using your mobile device or the onsite ipad. 


Bathrooms

There is one ADA-compliant, gender-neutral bathroom on the first floor, outside of Studio A.

There are 5 ADA-compliant bathrooms located on the second floor two of which are single-stalled, gender-neutral bathrooms located between Studio F and Studio U, and one of which is a single-stalled, gender-neutral bathroom located in Studio H. The remaining two bathrooms are multi-stalled and accessible by ramp through our male-identifying and female-identifying locker rooms.


Kitchenette Access

There is a kitchenette with a sink, refrigerator and counter space on the second floor.


Signage

Braille signage is posted on studios, offices, bathrooms and dressing rooms.


Education and Rentals Accessibility Features

Gibney encourages people with disabilities to attend classes, and we welcome the opportunity to make events more accessible. If you have any questions or access needs, please email us at classes@gibneydance.org in advance of the class you plan to attend.

We encourage people of all abilities to rehearse and hold their artistic practices at Gibney. For accessibility requests or inquiries about the accessibility of our studios, please contact rentals@gibneydance.org.

To best equip our renters, the Gibney Rentals team has the following considerations when booking studio space: 

  • The following studio has an elevated entrance that may require assistance for wheelchair users: Studio B.
  • The following studios have heavy, sound resistant doors that may require assistance when entering and exiting the studio for wheelchair users: Studio A; Studio U; Studio V; Studio W; Studio X; Studio Y; and Studio Z. 

Please notify the Gibney Rentals team in advance so we can best assist you on the day of your rental. 


In Case of Emergency

Wheelchair Users and Mobility Disabilities: If the person(s) cannot exit the building via stairs without weight-bearing assistance, notify Gibney staff members to wait with them at the welcome desk until the fire department, paramedics, or other authorities arrive and can help escort them out of the building.

Hard of Hearing and Deaf People: In case of a fire, fire alarms will flash bright white lights as the alarms ring.


Additional Information

Gibney is not a scent-free environment. Gibney is lit with fluorescent lighting. Lighting in select studios and offices can be adjusted upon request. Strobe lights may be used in certain events or performances. Strobe warnings will be written in programs and stated audibly.
