Get inside the intricate, rhythmic world of Lucinda Childs, Gibney Company’s Resident Choreographer, in this four-day workshop led by longtime company dancer and producer, Caitlin Scranton. Dancers will work with choreography from Childs’s Concerto, exploring the precision, repetition, musicality, and geometric spatial patterns that define her iconic movement language. Through phrase work and ensemble material, participants will build an embodied understanding of how repetition, variation, and rhythm create momentum, complexity, and intensity.

With extensive experience performing, teaching, and setting Childs’s choreography, Scranton offers a unique opportunity to dive directly into the physical and choreographic world of one of contemporary dance’s most influential artists.

About Concerto

Choreography: Lucinda Childs
Music: Harpsichord Concerto, Op. 40 by Henryk Górecki
Duration: 9 min
Dancers: 7

Lucinda Childs’s Concerto is set to “Harpsichord Concerto, Op. 40” by Henryk Górecki. Created in 1993, this work for 7 dancers is one of Childs’s most-often revived pieces. Building intensity by pairing her signature repetition and variation of phrase with the increasing drama of the score, Concerto demands that dancers not only follow strict rhythms, but also develop a holistic sense of contrasting patterns through space. It is a highly dynamic piece which exposes dancers to the rigor and evolution of Childs’s repetitive phrase work, geometric relationships across space, and complex musicality.
