Description:  A Couple offers an intimate and evocative study of human connection. Adapted from his full-length Figure No. 16, this work is a poetic meditation on relationships—perhaps romantic, perhaps platonic, perhaps something beyond definition. Set to the expressive piano compositions of Johannes Brahms as performed by Glenn Gould, the duet distills the shifting complexities between two people, revealing a narrative that is at once deeply personal and universally resonant.

Another Look

Description: Lucinda Childs’s Another Look returns to Philip Glass’ rarely performed Another Look at Harmony, Part IV, music dating to the beginning of their artistic partnership in 1975. Created for Gibney Company, the new evening-length work will bring Childs’ signature precision, musicality, and rigorous use of structure to the score’s intricate vocal and rhythmic architecture. Performed by twelve dancers, Another Look will mark the first full-length choreographic realization of the complete score, extending a remarkable five-decade artistic dialogue between Childs and Glass into a new generation.

Description: Lucinda Childs’s Three Dances (for prepared piano) John Cage embraces the rhythmic intensity of John Cage’s 1944-45 composition Three Dances, exploring the intricate interplay between music and movement. Childs’ signature postmodern minimalist precision and deep reverence for structured repetition take center stage in this stunning new work for eight dancers. This world premiere exemplifies Childs’ lifelong fascination with transdisciplinarity and formalism, harkening back to her Judson Dance Theater roots.

Description: Created by Sharon Eyal and her partner DJ Gai Behar in 2013 for NDT 2, Sara revolves around memories, dreams, emotions, inspiration, loneliness, sorrow, caring and sharing about life. “It springs from the sub-conscious but is very humane at the same time,” says Eyal.

Trio (of six)

Description: Trio (of six) is a reconfiguration of the 1996 work which had been a staple of William Forsythe’s repertoire in Frankfurt, Germany. The work has been restaged several times in its original trio form, most recently at the Paris Opera Ballet. Forsythe requested that he be able to rearrange the work for Gibney Company, as the small ensemble offered a significant degree of organizational flexibility. This six-person staging reflects his practice of evolving works over time and adapting them to the local creative environment.

Bliss

Description: For this large-scale ensemble piece, Swedish choreographer Johan Inger uses the legendary Köln Concert by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett; music that many consider to be the epitome of virtuoso improvisation. Rather than translating the music one-to-one into movement, it is more the feeling of Jarrett’s iconic music – free, soaring and ecstatic – that Inger translates into beautifully crafted dance, sending not only listeners, but audience members into a state of bliss.

Description: Conceived as a farewell, “When It Was” is a poignant duet as an attempt to grasp what unexpectedly shifts and might never return. Set to the aching strains of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” the work captures the unspoken strength and dependency in a partnership, up until a fragile and sudden place, where trust and balance are questioned, redefining the sense of identity.

Rain Dogs

Description: A dog ventures beyond its territory, only to lose the scent of home—its trail washed away by rain. This image sparked Rain Dogs, Johan Inger’s reflection on disorientation, identity, and the often-contradictory nature of human connection. Set to the gravelly soundscape of Tom Waits, the work unfolds with irony, grit, and emotional depth.

Beck/Call

Description: Beck/Call is a work for two voices: one that speaks to leaving, to longing for whatever may be after this, beyond this, other than this. The present will tug us back, beg our attention over and over again, and yet – a pull, a tug, a calling to go. Upon arrival we will hear a second voice: an echo, an urge to turn back and follow the thread, see it again. “Remember” this voice will say to us: Don’t you remember? Wasn’t it so sweet?

Vukani

Description: Meaning to awaken, Vukani explores communion with the elders, a search for guidance, provoking the spirit to take over the body, and showing the way. South African choreographer Mthuthuzeli November deploys his unique choreographic language, informed by both traditional South African (Xhosa) dance and street dance as well as by the Western traditions of ballet and contemporary movement styles.
